Minneapolis just might surprise you every now and then. That’s what sophomores Erica and Ryan found out from their time volunteering with Habitat. The two met on the first day of Freshman year and are still remain good friends. During this past fall, they decided to go on Mega Build together and learned a lot from the experience of being on a build site. While most of the other volunteers were painting, Erica and Ryan were using power tools and sanding a deck for the house. Both were equally surprised at how much trust Habitat for Humanity puts in their volunteers to get the job done. Neither one had any experience in using power tools or building a deck, but that didn’t stop them from contributing on the site. That has been one of their favorite parts-- getting a chance to get into the community and make a difference. Once they got off campus, they saw the need for housing in the Twin Cities and how they could make a positive impact in the lives of others. Growing up in a nice neighborhood, it was initially hard to understand how other people lived. But their compassion and friendship promoted the duo to give up a Saturday in October to work a full day on building a deck for a family that will make memories in their new, safe home. These two were really fun volunteers and without their passion toward Habitat’s mission and willingness to share their time, Habitat would not be able to make the difference in the lives of as many as it does. Thank you Erica and Ryan for being you and for taking the initiative to make Minneapolis an even better place to live for one family at a time!
